West Linton’s Graham Institute was packed on Monday night with over 100 local residents showing up to watch Christine Grahame MSP and David Mundell MP go head to head in the debate over Scotland’s future. Both sides made an impassioned plea to voters ahead of the ballot which takes place in just over one month’s time.
Questions from the audience touched on many of the main national issues, including currency plans, as well as focusing on how independence would impact the Borders.
Commenting following the debate Tweeddale MP David Mundell said: “This debate was an excellent opportunity for local residents to put their points and questions to both sides. The high turnout is testament to the strong public interest we are seeing ahead of the vote in little over a month’s time. The meeting was extremely well organised and many thanks go to Victoria Harburn for all her hard work in helping pull things together. I would strongly encourage anyone with an interest to come along to either of next week’s debates in Peebles or Innerleithen. This is the most important decision we will ever take and I believe it is really important that people have all the facts they need before casting their ballot.”
The debate was the first in a series of local debates with subsequent debates taking place in Macfarlane Hall in Peebles next Monday (the 18th of August) at 7pm and in Innerleithen’s Memorial Hall next Wednesday (20th of August). All local residents are invited to attend and will have the chance to ask questions to both campaigns.
