Clydesdale MP David Mundell says any plans to completely close Biggar Police Station would be misguided and another blow to local services in the region.
The local representative says he was given assurances when the front counter was shut at the station the building would still be accessible for residents to meet the police.
It is now being reported that Biggar’s station is on a list of stations being lined up for closure under an estates review by Police Scotland.
Commenting David Mundell MP said: “This is hugely disappointing news and would see yet more dreadful cutbacks to vital local services for the people of Clydesdale.
“I am firmly against any plans which would see Biggar police station shut completely having been given assurances that there would still be access for locals to the building despite the loss of a manned front counter.
“That in itself was a blow to local policing but if this move goes ahead then I would have serious concerns about a visible police presence in the area which is what people want.
“Local policing is absolutely vital for rural communities in enabling them to feel secure where they live and these plans to close the police station in Biggar are misguided.
“With stations in Lesmahagow, Carluke and Hamilton also under threat, local police services in Lanarkshire face being decimated.
"I am meeting with police chiefs in the area soon where I will be voicing my concerns."
