Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell has hailed the World Gold Panning Championships as a real boost to Moffat.
The 41st edition of the championships are being held in the town this week (7-12 August), which is the first time they have been held in the UK since 1992, when they were held at Wanlockhead, which is also in Mr Mundell's constituency.
Mr Mundell gave the opening speech at the championships which is seeing competitors from all around the world take part in the hunt for gold.
There are also children's activities on each day in the town's Hope Johnstone Park as well as live entertainment on each evening.
Commenting on the championships, David Mundell MP said: "It is absolutely fantastic for a world event to be held right herein my hometown of Moffat and I was delighted to welcome competitors from so many countries to the championships.
"With hotels and B and B's full to the brim for the week, the local economy is going to receive a major boost with those taking part and visitors also spending money in our shops, restaurants and bars.
"While I can't promise the weather that the gold panners enjoyed last year in California, what I can promise is that Moffat has a heart of gold and everyone will be made very welcome.
"The last time these championships were staged in the UK was 25 years ago in Wanlockhead so it is a real coup for Moffat to be hosting to such a prestigious event."
