Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell was joined last week at Westminster by Graeme Acers, who was down in London as part of his work shadowing. Graeme, who has a keen interest in politics, was recently elected by his teachers and peers as Head Boy at Moffat Academy. Mr Mundell, who was Head Boy at Lockerbie Academy in the 1980s, was pleased to arrange the placement at House of Commons to allow Graeme to find out more about the job of a Member of Parliament. Mr Mundell is always keen to welcome constituents to Parliament, especially when it helps young people become more engaged and active in politics. Over the course of the week Graeme experienced first hand the day to day parliamentary schedule, attending committee meetings and watching the debate unfold in the chamber. Graeme also had the opportunity to meet Mr Mundell’s staff and gain an insight into the work they do.
Talking about his placement Graeme commented: “It was an amazing visit that confirmed my interest in politics. The experience gave me a real insight into politics, and simply being at Westminster made me realise that I would like to go back someday. I felt very excited that I was watching important issues first hand that would be mentioned in the next day's newspapers.
“It was a pleasure to welcome Graeme down to Westminster. I was extremely impressed by his enthusiasm and genuine interest in politics. All too often young people are perceived as being disinterested in the political process and Graeme certainly helps dispel that image. I hope seeing what goes on behind the scenes gave Graeme an insight into the important work politicians do, that isn’t always captured in the media. I wish him all the best for the future and I am sure he will represent the students, staff and wider community in Moffat with distinction.”
