LOCAL MP David Mundell and MSP Oliver Mundell have called on the Post Office to take urgent steps to maintain a service in Langholm.
It follows confirmation that the Post Office counter within the High Street Londis Convenience Store will be withdrawn from 5.30 pm on November 13.
The Post Office say the 'temporary' closure follows the resignation of the postmaster and withdrawal of premises for Post Office use.
They plan to advertise the branch in a bid to reinstate a counter service within the town.
The local politicians stressed the importance retaining a branch in the town, which has been hit by a series of recent economic blows.
David Mundell said: "We have been contacted by concerned constituents who are extremely worried that the current sub-Post Office is to close.
"This news comes on top of job losses and other bad news in Langholm.
"It is ironic that the Post Office was highlighted as a substitute for the town's RBS branch which was closed earlier this year."
Meanwhile, Oliver Mundell added: "Langholm's rural location means it is vital the Post Office ensure a service is maintained.
"It is important that there is sufficient support and incentive to encourage someone, perhaps an existing business, to take on the role."
