Local MP David Mundell is calling for the 30mph sign as you come into Walkerburn on the south side of the bridge to be moved further out of the village to avoid it being obscured by trees which prevent the electricity substation being seen from the road. Currently the sign is not very visible and there is a feeling in the local community that this might lead to drivers ignoring it and driving at excessive speeds through the village. Mr Mundell has written to the council asking them to consider moving the sign and to consult with the community regarding the current problem.
Mr Mundell said: “This is clearly one of these cases that needs a bit of common sense to sort it out. I have written to the council and asked them to give the matter consideration. The whole point of road signage is that it is there to be seen by drivers.
“Obviously the problems with cars driving at excessive speeds through Walkerburn is going to be exacerbated if the sign is hidden by the trees. However, on the other had visitors and local residents don’t want the villages appearance to be brought down by an electricity substation. I hope the council can find a positive solution that suits everyone affected.”
