Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell was on hand last Friday (November 11th) to show his support for Scottish Water's winter campaign at a meeting in Lockerbie.
The MP hopes to raise awareness of the company's winter messages for local people, which includes lowering pipes throughout the region, and is keen not to see a repeat of the damage caused by the severe cold weather of last year.
Commenting after the meeting, Mr Mundell said: “It was great to see that steps are being taken regarding this important issue, which affects us all. Lessons had to be learned after last year, and I'm happy to endorse the measures Scottish Water are putting in place to address this.”
Bill Elliot, Regional Communities Manager, said: “We are working hard on a number of fronts across Dumfries & Galloway to lower water mains and supply pipes to reduce the risk of them freezing in the winter weather. Last year’s deep ground frost caused freezing of water pipes all over Scotland but the issue was particularly prevalent in some parts of Dumfries & Galloway. So we have had a rolling programme of lowering these pipes to address the issue in Lochmaben, Moniaive, Lockerbie and other towns and villages.
“We have also been working since the start of the year to equip the business with the resources, trained staff volunteers, contingencies and processes to ensure the business is well equipped to tackle any repeat of the prolonged cold spell which affected Scotland last winter.”
Scottish Water has also launched its Winter Campaign to encourage communities throughout Scotland to follow its winter code – a set of simple steps to protect your pipes, be prepared and heat, insulate and protect homes and businesses.
