Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell is recovering after joining Annan fundraiser, 14 year-old Billie Jean Sedgwick for the final leg of her coast to coast Ride of Hope 2012. Billie Jean has taken part in a number of challenging cycle events as part of her self-titled crusade against cancer and has raised over £20,000 pounds for Cancer Research UK. Having joined this year’s cycle back to Annan from Tynemouth, in Eastriggs, Mr Mundell fully appreciated the determination, fitness and inspiration demonstrated by the young people who had cycled the full distance across the two day event had shown. Mr Mundell feels that Billie Jean’s example and story is truly remarkable and shows the great potential people have to help others if they set their mind to it.
Mr Mundell commented: “These young people, with Billie Jean at the helm are truly inspirational. This cycle is not easily undertaken and having got back on my bike again after a few years I realise what a tremendous physical and mental effort they have all put in. Billie Jean and her team deserve all the praise they can get and I want to say a massive thank you on behalf of everyone locally and across the UK who will benefit from the funds they have raised.
“Young people are often portrayed in a negative light but Annan and the surrounding area can be very proud of what this team have achieved and the example they have set.”
