Local MP David Mundell joined pupils at Wallace Hall Academy for Rural Schools day. The event is organised annually by the Queensberry Initiative and aims to encourage organisations and businesses to share their experiences and expertise with pupils who are planning their careers and looking for employment.
Around 80 organisations took part including charities, public sector organisations, local business and producers. Mr Mundell was guided round by pupils who feel the scheme has been extremely beneficial in providing contacts and information in careers and extra circular activities that interest them. Mr Mundell was also pleased to take the opportunity to talk with local business and thank them for the time and energy they have put into this project in order to help the wider community.
Mr Mundell was extremely impressed with the day and was keen to congratulate the Queensberry Initiative for all their hard work and planning which even managed to withstand the weather on a day which saw the UK’s highest level of rain fall, here in Southwest Scotland.
Speaking after the event Mr Mundell said: “This event is a fantastic opportunity for the pupils of Wallace Hall, it gives them the opportunity to find out all they need to know about potential careers from the people who know most about them. Organisations from across the region and the immediate community bring their expertise on site for the day.
“I was greatly impressed by the way the event had been organised and on behalf of all those who benefit I would like to say thank you to the Queensberry Initiative. I also want to take this opportunity to thank all the exhibitors for sharing their time and experience with the pupils, showing the important role local organisations can play in helping the wider community.
“In these difficult economic times, we have to do everything we can locally to make sure our young people are competitive in the job market. It is also really important to show talented pupils that there are opportunities for them in our area.”
