Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell will this week meet Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown MSP to seek Scottish Government support for improvements to services from Lockerbie station.
Mr Mundell is campaigning for a Scotrail service for Lockerbie which would see trains from Lockerbie getting into Edinburgh and Glasgow before 9 am and return train later in the evening, as well as improved carriage provision so passengers from Lockerbie do not have to stand.
Mr Mundell said: “It is clear that there is still demand for an earlier service to both Glasgow and Edinburgh and that the current trains which get in after 9am, are not meeting local demand or need.
“There has always been a strong economic case for a commuter service to Scotland’s major cities, which should be less than an hour away at that time in the morning, but the rail industry has persistently come up with excuses as to why it can’t happen.
“As both Virgin and Transpennine seem to offer no hope of such a service, the idea of a Scotrail service, starting in Carlisle seems like the only realistic way forward. I am looking for support from the Scottish Government in my campaign to make this happen.”
