Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell has welcomed the announcement that milk processors have dropped the planned cuts in milk prices. Mr Mundell, who held a meeting in his constituency attended by over 50 farmers last week, believes this announcement shows willing but must not be used as a diversion from the talks to secure a long term sustainable solution.
Mr Mundell is hopeful that the continued meetings facilitated by Farming Minister Jim Paice will result in agreement on a voluntary code of practice. The local MP has pledged to continue to support local dairy farmers and keep them updated with any developments.
Commenting Mr Mundell said: “The decision to scrap the proposed cuts is welcome news for dairy farmers and shows what can be achieved when everyone works together.
“The campaign has got the message out there that farming needs to be sustainable and this announcement will give some welcomed respite.
“Everyone involved must, however continue, to work together to secure a longer term solution and it is right that the Government continues to support that process. As this process goes ahead I will be doing everything I can to support local farmers and keep them informed.”
