A moving service was held at Closeburn Church and War Memorial on Sunday, during which 22 former pupils from Wallace Hall Academy who died 65 years ago were remembered.
The former pupils were remembered as their relatives lit 22 candles prior to the two minutes silence, with Academy children reading the names of the fallen as the candles were lit.
Afterwards there was a tree planting ceremony to mark the 65th anniversary of the pupil’s death during WW2.
Ex-servicemen and relatives of the former pupils laid wreaths after the ceremony, as did local MP David Mundell. Afterwards the MP was amongst those who gave short speeches.
The MP said later: “I was very honoured to be asked to join the community at Closeburn and play a part in their Remembrance Service. It is important that we never forget the ultimate sacrifice our servicemen and women gave during World War 1 and 2 so that we could enjoy the lives we have today. It is also very touching to recall that from such a small school as this 22 former pupils died during WW2. But is also equally important that we remember the other servicemen and women who have died in conflicts right up to the present day, and also all those that they leave behind.”
