Local MP David Mundell joined the thousands of people lining the Olympic torch route, watching it leave the Burns Statue in Dumfries and pass through Annan before seeing it complete its Scottish visit in Gretna. The Torch came to Dumfriesshire after extensive lobbying by politicians and local residents alike.
Speaking as the Olympic Torch finished its final relay leg in Scotland Mr Mundell who earlier in the month saw the Torch arrive in Stranraer said:
“Today Dumfries and Galloway has shown outstanding Olympic spirit proving it doesn’t matter whether you are first or last, or indeed both, the important thing is taking part.”
“Everyone locally can be very proud of way Dumfriesshire has embraced the aspirations this relay represents. People from all across our region have joined together to mark our moment in Olympic history and in doing so have demonstrated, in front of a global audience, the sense of community that makes this area so special.”
