Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell, who represents one of the largest rural parliamentary constituencies in the UK has welcomed new safeguards for postal services announced by Ofcom. Mr Mundell believes that maintaining local access to the Royal Mail network is essential for local residents and businesses in the region. Under new proposals, access to Royal Mail’s estate of 115,500 post boxes will be protected with a requirement that 98 per cent of all households across the UK should be within half a mile of a post box. Mr Mundell is pleased that the Royal Mail share Ofcom’s view that the current requirement, which covers less than half of the UK’s 121 postcode areas and only 15 per cent of its geographic area, is not fit for purpose.

Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell has met with Julie Pironi, Head of Royal Mail in Scotland to discuss the future of the current Lockerbie Post Office building when the current Post Office moves to another location in Lockerbie Town Centre. Royal Mail is the owner of the building which also houses the local mail delivery centre. Whilst welcoming the move to another premises and the security this offers to the future of the Post Office in the town, Mr Mundell is keen that the current building is put to good use given its prominent position on the High Street.

The local MP is worried that the debate has departed from the facts and is confusing his constituents who fear the instability and lack of financial security any transition may bring.

Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell has renewed calls for the Royal Mail to look again at the issues surrounding the ML12 postcode. The local MP has been contacted once again by angry constituents who are tired of receiving targeted mailing based on their Motherwell postcode and facing confusion around their insurance premiums which differ substantially from those of others who live just 10 minutes down the road.
