There was a strong Better Together theme at the recent Conservative’s Biggar Branch Burns Supper, when former Labour MSP Karen Gillon, and ‘Friend of the Union’, joined local MP David Mundell as one of the guest speakers.
This, the branch’s third annual Burns Supper, was held at The Mill Inn, Coulter.
After a welcome by Alex Allison, local councillor Hamish Stewart gave the Address to the Haggis, followed by Mr Mundell, who said the Selkirk Grace.
Two well known former local Clydesdale councillors, Patrick Ross-Taylor and Beith Forrest, gave the Loyal Toast, and the Immortal Memory.
Following a reading by Mr Mundell, Douglas Telfer gave the Toast to the Lassies, and Karen gave a very entertaining reply to the toast to the lasses, in her usual robust style.
“Of course, there is much debate about Burns political opinion, but I think the poem "The Dumfries Volunteers" sets out his unionist credentials:- "Be Britain still to Britain true, Amang ourselves united; For never but by British hands maun British wrangs be righted,” the MP told his Coulter audience.
