Tweeddale MP David Mundell has met the High Commissioner of Namibia, His Excellency George Liswaniso, at Westminster ahead of a visit by the diplomat to Peebles High School. The school has forged links with Sam Nujoma Combined School in the East Caprivi region of Namibia, with a group of teachers and pupils from Peebles visiting Namibia last summer to work with pupils and staff there on teaching and extra-curricular activities.
Mr Mundell said:
“It was a great pleasure to meet the High Commissioner, Mr Liswaniso. The High Commissioner has been a strong supporter of the link between Peebles High School and Sam Nujoma School in Namibia and I was able to hear about his plans to join the delegation from Namibia which is visiting Peebles next month.
“The link between the two schools is a great initiative and something really worth celebrating. It brings enormous benefits to all involved, both in Peebles and in Namibia and I commend the organisers for the work they have done. I know from my own experience taking part in voluntary work in Africa what a rewarding experience it can be – and how much you as a participant learn – from making new connections with people from a different continent and culture. This is particularly the case for young people. I am looking forward to meeting the High Commissioner again when he in Peebles next month.”
