Tweeddale MP David Mundell has welcomed plans to launch a local Better Together group in the Peebles area.
The inaugural meeting is being held on September 5 at the Eastgate Theatre, Peebles, starting at 7.30pm.
At Peebles, local campaigners, including the MP, will set out the positive case for Scotland staying in the UK.
Mr Mundell explained: “The meeting will be a chance for local people to find out how they can get involved in the campaign for a strong Scotland in the UK, as well as a chance to raise their questions and on the ways breaking away from Britain would affect them and their families.”
He added: “From meeting and speaking to people in Tweeddale I know there is strong local support for the campaign and, even prior to the official launch, there has been a really positive response. However, we need everyone in Peebles who want Scotland to stay within the United Kingdom to get involved in the campaign, and this launch event is a great way to learn how to do that. This launch is a chance for local people to get involved in the campaign for a strong Scotland in the UK, regardless of campaigning experience, and to come along and get the facts on separation.”
“That the SNP have been trying to hide the reality of an independent Scotland from Scottish people is sadly no surprise. Just like with currency, pensions, and EU membership, we are being kept in the dark on the SNP’s plans for a separate Scotland. They can’t guarantee that we’ll keep the pound, our passports or our pensions, and now it appears they’re not even sure if they want to keep The Queen as head of state. These remarks will only add to the confusion surrounding the Nationalists vision of an independent Scotland, and I know that people in my constituency will be as concerned as I am as to what would happen to the Monarchy should we see a vote to break up the Union next year.”
“None of this is to the benefit of Scotland and its people, so the message is clear – we are ‘Better Together’, added Mr Mundell.
