Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell has expressed sadness and disappointment that Langholm based weavers Reid & Taylor has gone into administration with the loss of around35 jobs. Mr Mundell who has been in contact with former staff, the administrators and representatives connected with the business in India has promised to do everything he can to support those made redundant and will continue to support efforts to find a way forward for the business.
The firm have been manufacturing fabrics and garments for the Reid and Taylor brand dating back to 1837.
But last week, following financial problems, the owners of the factory were forced called in the administrators owning to financial issues overseas and beyond their control. The news is particularly disappointing as the factory had a full order book but was unable to continue financing operations.
Commenting David Mundell MP said: “This is devastating news for Langholm and is a real blow for the whole community and textiles industry based there. Right now the priority must be to help and support for those facing job losses, and everyone involved needs to work together to try and find a way forward. This will be a distressing time for those who have lost their jobs and my thoughts are with them and their families.
“I will continue to keep in close contact with the administrators and local agencies so that I can do everything possible to support the affected individuals and the community. There are now big questions over the future of the business and the site, but given the way the business and manufacturing rights were structured the outlook is not positive at this time.
Mr Mundell added: “The speed at which this situation has unravelled is unfortunate, and we must now focus on ensuring that whatever happens to the existing business that the site will be able to be put back into use and that a buyer can be found. I will remain in contact with the administrators and will continue to monitor events closely and work on behalf of the local community for the best possible outcome.”
