Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell has welcomed the visit of Phyllis McLean, a synchronised swimming coach for the British Olympic team to Annan. The Team GB coach will be on hand at Annan Swimming Pool on Wednesday to give youngsters a taster session on the Olympic Sport as part of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Sports Academy.
The visit follows the success of the Torch Relay which passed through Annan in front of large crowds last month. Mr Mundell who has been asked to be an Ambassador during the games has been working hard to promote sport and activity locally and feels this is yet another example of the regions commitment to sporting success. The local MP believes this once again demonstrates the exciting opportunities that hosting the Olympics presents not just for London but the whole of the UK.
Commenting, Mr Mundell said: “This is an excellent opportunity for young people in Annan to experience an Olympic sport, with one of the movers and shakers of synchronised swimming pool side. It is fitting that Annan receives this Olympic honour after the warm reception local residents gave the Torch when it went through the town last month. Once again this event demonstrates the advantages of hosting the games and I am pleased to see Dumfries and Galloway leading the way.”
