Local MP David Mundell recently visited Sainsbury’s store in Biggar to learn about how they have been ‘making a difference’ in the town.
The convenience store invited the Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP along to learn about two of the company’s charity projects.
Each year Sainsbury sponsors a local charity, selected by customers and colleagues, and this year in their Biggar store it is Scottish Autism’s local centre at Clannalba House at Lamington which benefits, not just financially, but also through increased awareness of their work in the community.
Another charity initiative is their FareShare Food Drive. Through this project they donate surplus food that is fit for human consumption to charities to ensure that it is not wasted. Recently big hearted Biggar customers boosted the project by donating 110 meals, which Sainsburys have matched to donate 220 meals to FareShare.
Biggar store manager Will Pitcairn added: “We were delighted to show Mr Mundell around the store so he could meet some of our colleagues and find out about the positive difference Sainsbury’s are making in his constituency. “
Afterwards the MP said: “It was good to meet Will and some of his staff and learn about how Sainsbury’s and its customers help the local community. They are to be congratulated for promoting local charities such as Scottish Autism, and I was also most impressed with the results of their FareShare project which sets out to help those less fortunate than ourselves.”
