Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell and MSP Oliver Mundell have expressed disappointment at retailer SPAR’s decision to press ahead with Post Office branch closures in Thornhill, Eastriggs, Gretna and Georgetown in August and September.
They are demanding the Post Office take action to ensure services continue to be provided in the communities.
In a joint-statement, David and Oliver Mundell, said: “It is very disappointing, but not surprising that C J Lang, who operate SPAR stores locally, have decided to press ahead with the closure of the Post Office branches in their local stores, after delaying the decision for four months because of COVID and to allow more time for discussions with the Post Office.
"We have spoken to C J Lang, who were not able to agree a different model of operating with the Post Office in the intervening period, and it is clear that they are not going to change their mind. It is now essential that the Post Office take immediate action to ensure that local people continue to have access to postal services.
“The Post Office have known for months that these closures were likely so we hope they already have contingency plans in place for alternative arrangements both in the short and medium term to make sure that the elderly and vulnerable and those who cannot easily travel, in particular, have access to the services they require. Local businesses also rely on these Post Offices and their needs must be met too.
“We are committed to working with the Post Office, any local business interested in taking on a Post Office or any community initiative to ensure continuation of services in Thornhill, Eastriggs, Gretna and Georgetown, but the principal responsibility is with Post Office to resolve this situation.
"The Post Office promoted the concept of putting branches inside convenience stores and now, where it hasn’t worked out, they must take responsibility for providing an alternative.”
David Mundell has previously raised the issue with Post Office Minister Paul Scully in the House of Commons and Business Secretary Kwasi Kwatang and is asking the Minister again to make sure the Post Office is fully aware of the impact of these closures and the need for them to act swiftly.
