Tweeddale MP David Mundell has called on council chiefs to take long-term action on the future of road safety at Leadburn Junction, after plans were recently announced to reduce the speed limit at the notorious accident blackspot. Mr Mundell said more long-term safety measures had to be taken by Midlothian and Scottish Borders Council to cut the number of accidents and fatalities at the junction, and that a roundabout would be the only sensible solution to ensure this.
Commenting on the new safety measures currently being considered (a 40mph speed restriction), Mr Mundell said: "It's all very well tinkering about with minor adjustments, but everyone knows what is really needed is a roundabout. Although improvements to lighting and signage at the junction were carried out in 2010, there has been no marked reduction in the number of accidents there since then. I call on Midlothian and Scottish Borders Council to join forces and get it done, to prevent the volume of collisions and injuries increasing even more."
