Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell is demanding urgent action to improve the trunk A702 road in his constituency.
The A702 is an important route linking Edinburgh with the main north-south M74, and is also used by many constituents travelling between Biggar and Abington, as well as school, local and regional bus services.
BEAR are responsible for its upkeep but the MP claims they have allowed it to deteriorate into an unacceptably poor condition.
After complaints about the road’s condition he contacted BEAR calling for improvements.
But their reply was as unacceptable as the condition of the road, said Mr Mundell, who has now contacted the agency again, demanding faster improvements, especially on the section between Coulter and Biggar where there is damaged anti-skid surfacing, lots of water damage and also standing water.
BEAR, responsible for maintenance of the trunk route on behalf of the Scottish government, have said they have two contracts planned for this section of the A702.
Sometime between April this year and March 2014 they hoped to carry out improvements from the A72 Symington junction to Station Road, Biggar, and improvements from Cornhill House to Causewayend were planned for 2014-2015.
But a BEAR official added that they could not guarantee these timetables since approval for these schemes had to come from Scottish Ministers and this had not yet been given.
“This section of road is in a shocking condition and this response from BEAR is simply not acceptable. This is a busy, heavily trafficked road and is important to many of my constituents who have to use it regularly for work and social reasons. I have now contacted BEAR again saying their timetabling is not acceptable and demanding that they repair this section in a much shorter timescale,” said Mr Mundell.
