LOCAL MP David Mundell is calling for an urgent investigation into two almost identical road accidents on the A7 at Ewes.
These accidents, which occurred within the last four months, follow two other crashes at the location over the past five years.
Now the Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale & Tweeddale MP has asked Bear Scotland, who are responsible for the road, to look at the circumstances of the accidents in case urgent alterations or modifications are required.
The MP took action after a constituent, who lives at the location, contacted him raising concerns that the next accident might result in a fatality.
He told the MP that the two latest accidents had occurred during very bad weather conditions and appear to have begun when drivers lost control on standing water before veering into the path of oncoming traffic, and crashing into his garden.
The location of the accidents is on an area of recently re-surfaced road on the A7 at Ewes, approximately 4.5 miles north of Langholm.
Both accidents were captured on CCTV, and resulted in the demolition of a telegraph pole. In both cases the cars were right-offs.
“Luckily in both these cases the occupants of the cars were not seriously injured, although the next person to have an accident here might not be so lucky,” said Mr Mundell.
“It appears there have been other accidents at this locus over the past five years, one even involving a police officer. My constituent’s concern does not stop at what might happen to another driver caught out by conditions here, but for his own safety. If a lorry were involved it might well strike his house.
“I have asked Bear Scotland to investigate this stretch of road as a matter of urgency. If there is something that can be done to prevent further accidents here I would hope this can be done before ice and snow is added to adverse weather conditions,” said Mr Mundell.
The MP is also planning to raise the issue at a meeting of the A7 Action Group which he is chairing on Friday.
