Speaking after attending the departure from the Chapelcross site of last flask of nuclear fuel elements, local MP David Mundell, said: “This is a day of mixed emotions. It is a great tribute to the workforce that they have completed defuelling ahead of target, but there is a real sense of sadness at the end of the nuclear era at Chapelcross. It is a real disappointment to me that the Chapelcross legacy is not a new nuclear power station at the Annan site, but the SNP have made sure that won't happen, so the priority now must be to keep as many jobs as possible for as long as possible during the decommissioning process, as well as continuing working towards other employment opportunities in the area through initiatives like the new Business Park and the Beyond Chapelcross programme."
