Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell has met with Julie Pironi, Head of Royal Mail in Scotland to discuss the future of the current Lockerbie Post Office building when the current Post Office moves to another location in Lockerbie Town Centre. Royal Mail is the owner of the building which also houses the local mail delivery centre. Whilst welcoming the move to another premises and the security this offers to the future of the Post Office in the town, Mr Mundell is keen that the current building is put to good use given its prominent position on the High Street.
Commenting following the meeting local MP Mr Mundell said: “It is really good news for the town that the Post Office is being retained and that a new home for it has been found on the High Street. However, the current Post Office is a very prominent building in Lockerbie and leaving that building empty is clearly not good for the centre of Lockerbie.
“That's why I have once again raised the issue with Julie Pironi and emphasised how important it is that the building does not sit empty, given its key location in the town. I have made clear the importance of putting the building to good use, whether that be through continued use by the Royal Mail or by letting somebody else use it. She has once again taken on board that concern and assured me that the Post Office are doing everything they can to make sure the new arrangements are a success and deliver for local residents.”
