Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell has contacted Punch Taverns to express his disappointment and anger at the way in which the Black Bull pub and hotel in Moffat has been boarded up.
The company currently owns the site and is in the process of trying to find a new operator for the historic pub.
However the local MP feels the present measures they have taken to secure the site are not in fitting with character of the town and, given the Black Bull’s prominent position on the main entrance road into Moffat, that more needs to be done to ensure it does not become an eyesore.
Mr Mundell believes the use of metal shutters is unnecessary and has asked that Punch Taverns explore other options and take the opportunity to consult with local residents and Moffat and District Community Council. He has also demanded reassurances that the building will not be allowed to fall into disrepair whilst the search for a new proprietor continues.
Commenting Mr Mundell said: “It is extremely disappointing to see another boarded up hotel on the way into Moffat and like many other local residents I am hopeful a new proprietor will be found as soon as possible. However given its historical importance and prominence it is really important that we do not let the Black Bull fall into a state of disrepair in the meantime. There is no reason why it needs to be turned into an eyesore and in my view the current use of metal shutters is wholly inappropriate.”
Mr Mundell added: “You only have to look at the buildings round about to see this is not in keeping with the character of Moffat. I understand and appreciate the anger this causes when so many other retailers, hoteliers and local residents work so hard to promote the town and invest their time and money in its upkeep. I have written to Punch Taverns making this clear and I have asked them to make direct contact with the Community Council and other interested parties locally to explore alternatives. I am also seeking reassurances that the building will not be allowed to fall into disrepair as that will only make it harder to get the Black Bull re-opened in the future.”
