Remembrance Week at Syracuse University always brings together some familiar Lockerbie faces and this year was no different as Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell bumped into his former neighbour George White. Mr White, who has now emigrated to America used to live in Harcourt Place in the town just round the corner from the local MP who grew up on Dryfe Road. George White was an ambulance driver at the time of the Air Disaster and was one of the many local emergency personnel who attended the scene.
Commenting David Mundell MP said: “Over a number of visits to Syracuse I have gotten used to meeting people with a strong connection to Lockerbie but this year was a little bit different. After so many years it was still a surprise to bump into my old neighbour at the rose laying service. It took me back in time and certainly made me feel my age as I think the last time I saw George, I was probably trying to sell my badly baked scones at his front door as a young boy.”
Mr Mundell added: “In a way it reminded me of all the benefits of living in and growing up in a town like Lockerbie where you know all the other people who live on your street and the fact that those friendships and connections still mean something years later.”
