Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell went back to school on Friday, visiting Eaglesfield and Nethermill Primary Schools on Friday.
He was invited into Eaglesfield Primary to discuss 'our society' with pupils and later popped in to Nethermill.
There he met the head teacher Martin Armstrong, pupils and George Odhiambo, who is visiting from Pala Primary School in Kenya.
At Eaglesfield the MP was very impressed by the tough questions posed by pupils and was fascinated by the knowledge and interest the pupils had in politics and society generally.
He said: “It should remind us all that these children are the voters, and maybe even the politicians, of tomorrow and so should be encouraged to take an interest in the running of their country.”
Mr Mundell said: “During my visit to Nethermill I was very pleased to get the chance to meet George Odhiambo. It was great to see the school helping develop these kinds of links which have great cultural benefits for the kids and the wider community.
“I have seen at first hand the benefits of these kinds of links when I visited Malawi earlier in the year. The highlight of that trip was the opportunity to visit Thawale Primary School which is linked with my own old school, Lockerbie Academy. There I met pupils and teachers and was also able to see in action the charity Mary’s Meals, which many people and churches in my constituency support.
“Thawale are very proud of their Dumfriesshire links, having a ‘Lockerbie Corner’ in one of the buildings. I was a deliveryman taking over pencils, paper and various teaching materials and letters from the Academy, and they were all gratefully received,” he added.
