Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell has welcomed the Government’s tough stance on tax avoidance.
On Monday the Government announced that it will strengthen legislation to block tax avoidance involving offshore intermediaries.
These intermediaries are based offshore, often in tax havens, and are used to avoid employment taxes.
It is a growing problem with an estimated 100,000+ workers being employed through an offshore intermediary, and in many cases the employee is unaware that their payroll is located offshore and tax is being avoided.
Ahead of this week’s budget on Wednesday local MP David Mundell commented: “I welcome the Governments tough stance on tax avoidance. In these difficult economic times it is important that everybody pays their fair share and off shore companies should certainly not be benefiting whilst ordinary worker pay their tax in full. I will continue to push the government to do more on this issue as part of a range of efforts to manage the deficit whilst introducing measures to boost growth and protect those who are willing to work hard to turn our economy around.”
