Local MP David Mundell recently visited Sainsburys store in Peebles to learn about how they have been ‘making a difference’ in the town.
The supermarket, which opened just over five years ago, invited the MP for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale along to learn about two of the company’s charity projects.
Each year Sainsbury sponsors a local charity, selected by customers and colleagues. This year it is the town’s Multiple Sclerosis group, and, throughout the year, the store undertakes various initiatives to raise money as well as raising the profile of the charity within the community. They also support local schools and clubs through Active Kids and local community groups.
Another charity initiative is their FareShare Food Drive, held earlier this month. Through this project they donate surplus food that is fit for human consumption to charities to ensure that it is not wasted. And earlier this month big hearted local customers boosted the project by donating a store cupboard item to complement the predominantly fresh produce that Sainsbury donates.
Peebles store manager Will Pitcairn added: “We were delighted to show Mr Mundell around the store so he could meet some of our colleagues and find out about the positive difference Sainsbury’s are making in his constituency.”
Afterwards the MP said: “It was good to meet Will and some of his staff and learn about how Sainsbury’s and its customers help the local community. They are to be congratulated for promoting local charities such as MS and I was also most impressed with the results of their FareShare project which sets out to help those less fortunate than ourselves.”
