Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale MP David Mundell has welcomed the announcement of a confirmed bidder for Scottish Coal assets. The local MP who has remained in close contact with the administrators, union officials and the Scottish Government believes that whilst the announcement does not give all the answers it is an important development and is the next step forward. Mr Mundell now anticipates that Broken Cross will remain open and is hopeful that the final details which will emerge over the next 4-6 weeks will present the best possible outcome locally.
Commenting Mr Mundell said: “This is a significant and important step forward and shows that there is a viable future for significant parts of the business. Obviously we will have to wait for the full details to emerge but the indications at this stage all the indications look hopeful. Unfortunately given the complexities surrounding the businesses finances the structure of this bidding process was inevitable however I fully understand that the wait is frustrating for former employees and the wider community. Over the coming weeks I will remain in close contact with all of the relevant stakeholders and will continue to do everything I can to represent local interests.
“As well as supporting the future of Broken Cross that also includes keeping a watchful eye on questions around restoration and will keep up the pressure to ensure that affected communities are not forgotten.”
Mr Mundell added: “This is still an extremely difficult time for those who have lost their jobs and everyone involved must continue to prioritise helping people back into employment. I understand there have been a number of specific issues both in terms of money owed and the Job Centre and I have been in contact with individual constituents to try and help resolve matters. I would strongly encourage anyone else who is having difficulties to get in touch with my office or that of their own MP.”
