A GLOBAL initiative to protect the environment by encouraging tree growth will be highlighted in Langholm this month.
Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell is seeking suggestions from E and L Advertiser readers for a good location in the town to plant a rowan sapling to promote the work of The Queen's Commonwealth Canopy (QCC).
The initiative, launched four years ago, now includes a network of tree conservation projects across all 53 Commonwealth nations.
Mr Mundell aims to plant the young tree in the Muckle Toon as part of the latest phase of the initiative.
He is one of around 500 UK MPs who volunteered to plant up to five saplings in their constituency to promote the ecological and other benefits of trees.
Mr Mundell said: "I felt it was important for Eskdale to have one of the young trees allocated to my constituency and I'm looking foreword to seeing how it grows in the years ahead."
Anyone with ideas for a suitable public space for planting the sapling is asked to hand in their suggestions to the E and L offices or email eskdaleliddesdale@gmail.com by next Monday.
