Local MP David Mundell was welcomed news that Peebles has been shortlisted in the ‘Britain’s Favourite Market Town’ category of the 2013 BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards.
Mr Mundell has given it his backing and now wants local people to get behind the town and vote for it to be the overall winner.
The 10 nominees in the category were selected by travel writer Brigid Benson, who said of Peebles: “Delightful riverside walks and fine Victorian architecture.”
Now in their third year, the BBC Countryfile awards are a celebration of our countryside and its people. The 2013 awards were launched in the August issue of BBC Countryfile Magazine, and feature 10 categories, from conservation projects and best heritage attraction to countryside writers and our finest nature reserves.
The public is invited to vote for their rural favourites, and full details can be found on BBC Countryfile Magazine’s website at www.countryfile.com/awardsvote, or you can email your votes to awards@countryfile.com. Voting closes on 30 September.
Commenting Tweeddale MP David Mundell said: “We all know how great Peebles is and in my view it has one of the best High Streets in Scotland. The community spirit and the hard work a number of business and local people living locally put in makes all the difference. This nomination is much deserved and recognises whatever happens in the vote that Peebles is a great Market Town. Winning this competition would help build the profile of the town and would encourage those from further afield to come and visit the town for themselves. That is why I am encouraging everyone locally to take a few minutes to cast a vote for Peebles.”
