LOCAL MP David Mundell has congratulated a youth theatre in Langholm for receiving £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to explore the history of the First World War's largest munitions factory in Gretna.
Central Stage Theatre received the money to commemorate the war's centenary next year.
“I am firmly of the view that the vital role Gretna and Eastriggs played in WW1 should be fully recognised during next year’s commemorations to mark the outbreak of hostilities in 1914, and so I wish this group every success with their project. It is especially important as part of the centenary that young people are given the chance to find out more about the incredible sacrifices that were made by men and women living locally and this project will allow that to happen,” said Mr Mundell.
The people who worked in this area made an immense contribution to the First World War effort and he was looking forward to seeing the results of the theatre group’s working with the local community to shape the story and sharing the heritage and history together, the MP added.
“The story of the part played by Gretna, Eastriggs and the surrounding communities in WW1 must not be overlooked and next year’s commemorations provide an ideal opportunity to ensure this area’s vital WW1 role is given due prominence. I know that a lot of work is going on locally to make sure these events are properly remembered and this project will be a great addition to the plans which are already underway.” said Mr Mundell.
